X-Risk Literate

16%

of the concerned U.S. adult population

The most bipartisan and heaviest AI-using segment in the sample, yet the group most focused on catastrophic and existential risk.

X-Risk Literate are nearly evenly split between Democrats (36%) and Republicans (36%), majority male (55%), and more likely than any other segment to use AI at work daily. Like every group, their top concern is job displacement (48%). What distinguishes them is that catastrophic risks appear on their radar at rates substantially above the sample average: extinction (16% vs. 9%), weapons and warfare (21% vs. 15%), and AI developing conflicting goals (13% vs. 8%). They are the most racially diverse segment in the sample, the most full-time employed (51%), and more than half have children.

AI is exciting but scary. i feel in the future countries will look at AI like we look at countries that have nuclear weapons.

Independent Woman, 74, PA Parent · Some college · Part-time worker

AI is VERY tricky and how to contain or control it (if possible) doesn't have a simple solution. AI is a technology that touches on almost every social, economical and political issue there is.

Man, 54, GA High school · Full-time worker

Great overall survey about AI and it's benefits and downsides. I try to focus on the learning models which is their moral compass.

Republican Man, 35, AL College degree · Full-time worker

My main concern with AI is less thinking and creativity in humans and too many people being dependent on relationships with AI.

Independent Woman, 40, LA Parent · High school · Full-time worker

I absolutely do not trust political people to regulate AI. I also do not trust Silicon Valley to regulate it either.

Republican Man, 44, MN College degree · Full-time worker

AI will never think on its own. Its just a website with instructions and does what its in the coding. It will replace jobs because of its instructions but man can never or will ever create a new being.

Not much. I wish the choices given were more broad. I was unable to express my full views, which are more along the lines of 'ban it' than 'it needs more regulation'.

Democrat Woman, 36, DE College degree · Full-time worker

If the creators of AI can't fully understand how their tools work because they deployed them too quickly, how can we trust people in government, who would understand the technology even less, to regulate it?

I believe that AI poses a moderate threat to our society, in the sense that it may currently threaten the state of the job market, or computer-science related jobs, that I desire to participate in soon. Additionally, I believe that AI also poses a decent threat to the authenticity of many forms of media, especially art and creative writing works. But, the most threatening aspect regarding AI to me is if companies or government officials decide to adopt AI into their systems without an extensive amount of testing, as that may result in severe consequences beyond what I have mentioned.

Man, 18, CA High school

Ai can be used for good or bad depending on who has created it and taught it. But people are inherently bad, so good intentions can also become sour

I think AI will do a lot more good than harm. For example replacing 60-70% of manual labor in the country. Now we do need something like UBI universal basic income to cover everyone who will lose their jobs to AI. I believe we can hit a point where AI will handle most of the labor needed and everyone can do whatever they want with their life having a hobby, starting a family, etc. We just need a system like UBI.

1..AI can be useful in many ways in work situations like forming emials, writing contracts, reviewing accounting data and other functions.2. I am wrried how AI will effect entry level jobs in the long term and how the information garnered by AI is being used current as well in the future. 3. I think AI has a lot of benefits, but it also comes with real risks around privacy, jobs, and safety. This survey made me think more about the need for balance. I’d like to see AI continue developing, but with stronger rules and transparency so people can trust it.

Republican Man, 29, MO Parent · Graduate degree · Full-time worker

I feel like AI has potential to dramatically make life easier for humanity, but it can also be weaponized and used to exploit certain populations. Similarly, it hogs resources (electricity, computer components) and cannot make decisions with 100% accuracy. I fear what AI will do to the economy (job disruption) and also personal data (unregulated privacy concerns).

Democrat Man, 34, KS Parent · College degree · Full-time worker

AI chatbots are incredibly useful for optimizing task efficiency. I find AI chatbots useful in school and at work. It is difficult for me to wrap my brain around advanced uses of AI like surveillance, weapons manufacturing, etc. I am afraid of AI taking jobs from artists and writers. But there are global issues involving AI that are not made to the general public like myself. I feel detached from my government. I want to see AI benefit users to help them have more free time. AI can be incredibly useful for all if used and managed with concern for human well being.

Not really. I agree with a lot of statements made here. And although I don't think AI is BAD, I believe we need to make absolutely sure it's used as a TOOL and not a complete replacement of everything and potentially a supreme "entity" that could end up seeing humans as a "virus" which needs to be erradicated.

I'm old school. so do it yourself or don't do it at all. AI is thinking for people instead of them developing their own thoughts and attitudes.

Democrat Man, 67, FL Parent · High school

What I didn't see addressed clearly was my real fear about AI, and that is the GIGO principle - garbage in, garbage out. If AI is simply a computer searching for answers, then it would be easy to data-dump answers that fit into a certain way of thinking. What I mean is this: If you put 10 marbles into a glass, and 5 represent the thoughts of one point of view and 5 represents another point of view, then you have a good balance. However, if you have a cup where there are 9 marbles representing one point of view and 1 representing another, then it's not balanced. I fear that there would be a way for someone, somehow to put in 9 marbles of their point of view, which would essentially cause AI to determine that "9" is true and "1" is not.

Independent Woman, 37, LA Parent · Graduate degree · Full-time worker

I am very concerned about AI more due to the pursuit of greed by the companies developing it. These companies are not monitoring the technological aspect as much as they should and as it becomes more widespread, I feel like its potential simply will not be able to be contained. The other major problem is competition amongst countries. China and the US both are competing to get the best out of this technology and political tension just makes the situation more untenable. Safeguards that would normally be considered are set aside in the pursuit of a superior system without considering the dangers that would entail.

Independent Man, 38, NC Some college

You happened to find a scientist who sets guardrails in some prominent AI models. AI will change human society in ways we do not understand.
