The least concerned segment on every measure, yet they passed the concern screener. They trust institutions, use AI comfortably, and see the current trajectory as broadly acceptable.
Who They Are
Trusting Pragmatists are the largest segment in the sample. They are near gender parity (51% male, 49% female), with a mean age of 49 and a broad age distribution. They are the most Republican of the five segments (33%), though Democrats still constitute a plurality (40%), with 25% Independent. More than half (55%) have children. Education levels are near the sample mean.
Their AI use is moderate to high: 20% use it daily or more at work, while 30% have never used it professionally. Their AI literacy score (55% correct) is near the sample average. They are not unusually informed or uninformed about AI. They are the demographic center of the concerned public.
What sets Trusting Pragmatists apart is not a demographic feature but an attitudinal one: they are comfortable. They passed the concern screener, which means they registered at least some concern about AI when asked directly. But that concern sits at the lowest level of any segment, and it coexists with the highest trust in institutions and the highest excitement about AI's potential.
What Worries Them
Trusting Pragmatists select the fewest total concerns of any segment (5 out of 14), comparable to X-Risk Literate in narrowness but with a very different composition. Their top concern is misinformation and deepfakes at 54%, the highest rate of any segment for this single item. The dominance of misinformation in their profile is notable: it accounts for a larger share of their concern portfolio than in any other group, suggesting that their residual worry about AI is anchored to a specific, concrete, widely covered harm rather than a broad assessment of the technology's trajectory.
Job displacement follows at 38%, below the sample average. Cybercrime and scams reach 32%, the highest of any segment. Privacy sits at 26%. These are practical, tangible concerns tied to personal risk rather than systemic assessment.
Existential concerns are essentially absent. Human extinction reaches only 3%. Conflicting goals: 6%. Environmental impact: 15%. The catastrophic and systemic harms that define the other segments' concern profiles are marginal here. This is a group whose residual AI concern centers on information integrity and personal security, not on technology-level risk.
How They See AI
The emotional register is the most balanced in the sample. Nearly a quarter (24%) describe themselves as more excited than concerned about AI, the highest rate of any segment. Fifty-three percent say they are equally concerned and excited. Only 19% are more concerned than excited. This is a group that has largely resolved the excitement-versus-concern question in favor of cautious optimism.
Trust in institutions is the highest of any segment on both measures. Forty-four percent trust AI companies "somewhat" and 5% trust them "a great deal," producing a combined 49% with at least some institutional trust. Government trust follows a similar pattern: 32% somewhat, 4% a great deal. Compare this to Progressive Alarmed, where two-thirds trust tech companies "not at all." The trust gap between these two segments is the largest attitudinal divide in the dataset.
Regulation preferences reflect this trust. Sixty percent want stronger oversight, but only 6% want a pause, by far the lowest in the sample. Eighteen percent say current levels are about right, the highest "status quo" endorsement. Nearly 4% say there is already too much regulation. Thirteen percent say they don't know enough to have an opinion, the highest uncertainty rate.
AI ranks last among eight national issues in their priorities (mean rank 6.3). The economy, healthcare, housing, crime, and terrorism all rank above it. AI concern exists in this segment but competes with, and loses to, material and security priorities that feel more immediate.
What Resonates
Trusting Pragmatists are the least responsive segment in the message experiment. Only one message exceeds 40% "very convincing": Children and Family at 44%. Technical Safety follows at 38%, Light Touch Transparency at 37%. The gap between the top message and the rest is the largest of any segment, suggesting that Children and Family has a unique ability to activate concern even in the most sanguine group.
The existential risk frames are functionally rejected. The pause message scores 7% "very convincing," the lowest of any message-segment combination in the study. Forty-nine percent perceive it as "alarmist" and another 34% call it "exaggerated," producing a combined 83% negative perception. The international treaty frame fares only slightly better at 16%. These are not messages that fail to persuade; they are messages that actively alienate.
The US Competitiveness frame does comparatively better here than in most segments (22% very convincing), though it still falls well short of the practical frames. The argument that America must stay ahead of China has some traction with a group that skews Republican and tends to trust institutions to manage competition.
The perception data tells a consistent story: Trusting Pragmatists perceive practical, moderate frames (transparency, technical safety, children's welfare) as realistic, and dramatic or catastrophic frames as overblown. Their threshold for credibility is the highest in the sample.

Implications
Trusting Pragmatists challenge the assumption that passing a concern screener makes someone part of the "worried" public. This segment cleared the same threshold as Alarm Maximalists but occupies a fundamentally different position: they have heard the arguments, registered mild unease, and concluded that the situation is manageable. Framing them as "disengaged" or "uninformed" would be inaccurate. Their AI literacy is near the sample mean, their AI use is moderate to high, and their views are internally consistent. They have a genuine orientation toward institutional trust and technological optimism, not a deficit of information.
The near-total rejection of existential framing in this segment (7% very convincing, 83% negative perception) has practical implications for public discourse. If roughly a quarter of the concerned public perceives catastrophic AI arguments as actively alienating, then organizations leading with existential risk framing may lose this constituency before the conversation begins. The children and family frame, which achieves 44% even here, demonstrates that concern can be activated in this group through practical, concrete channels that do not require accepting a catastrophic premise.
The segment's high institutional trust may also be its most distinctive analytical feature. In a sample where distrust of both tech companies and government is the dominant pattern, Trusting Pragmatists stand out as the remaining constituency for institutional legitimacy. Whether that trust proves durable as AI becomes more embedded in daily life, or whether it erodes as the other segments' distrust has, is a question the present cross-sectional data cannot answer. Longitudinal tracking of this segment's trust trajectory would be among the more informative extensions of this research.
