Trusting Pragmatists
23%of the concerned U.S. adult population
The least concerned segment on every measure, yet they passed the concern screener. They trust institutions, use AI comfortably, and see the current trajectory as broadly acceptable.
Trusting Pragmatists are the largest segment (23%) and the closest to gender parity (51% male). They are the most Republican group (33%), though Democrats still hold a plurality (40%). On overall AI concern, 77% select "somewhat concerned," with none selecting "extremely." Nearly a quarter (24%) say they are more excited than concerned about AI, the highest rate in the sample. Their top concern is misinformation at 54%, the strongest single-concern dominance of any segment. Existential concerns are essentially absent (3% select extinction). They have the highest trust in both tech companies and government of any group.

In Their Own Words
What Pragmatists respondents said when asked to share their thoughts on AI in their own words.
I think it's impossible for the US to regulate. It'd need to be THE WORLD regulating. I simply do not trust China, or other countries to really regulate it themselves. I'd much rather we be able to compete than to kneecap ourselves and hand over the advantage to more nefarious countries.
I'm an A.I. Prompt Engineer/Data Annotator. I found this survey interesting, informative and a bit amusing. I would love to sit in on your focus groups and I'd be happy to contribute some real-life views on AI, how we work with it, and what's being done to ensure safety as we develop it's responses.
My views on AI are really mixed, but for the most part, are positive for the future with it. I do freelance art as well so Gen AI has reall been dirsputive, but I am so intrigued by the technology of it all.
We have lot to learn about AI and safety and how it be good and productive with all who use it.
I think the idea that any human-developed system would ultimately end up deciding to end all human life is somewhat fantastical and not based in reality.
I work on AI and talk with AI chatbots on a daily basis. It can be scary, but I see a lot of benefits as well.
I’m older anf just find it amazing what AI is able to do. I can’t begin to imagine what it will b like 50 years from now.
i think there is a lot of good in AI. it can also be used negatively. That is something that needs safeguards.
It is my hope that AI is properly regulated. As it stands now, I don't feel as though humanity has much to worry about, outside of creative types who may need to worry due to creativity being stifled if people become too dependent on it.
The door's been opened and there's no going back. It is just the fate of humankind to keep progressing; it is our destiny. I am a bit worried about AI but every age has its issues. Do we want to be in the horrible unsafe unhygenic Dark Ages or do we want our kids stuck on the phone with their virtual date... thanks for the thought-provoking study.
In my own personal opinion AI is an amazing technological development
I wish we all had a better understanding of how LLMs work, since they seem to be black boxes.
I believe many people are overhyping AI, and it's not "too late" to implement regulations. Even ordinary individuals like myself can learn and understand the basics to contribute to the dialogue, helping shape policies that serve the common good of humanity. We shouldn't give up and say, "it's moving too fast, it's out of our hands, and it's too powerful to stop now!" That mindset is dangerous because it could lead to our downfall, not AI.
I find that I have a hard time with trusting the government with handling technology without abusing it as well as AI companies utilizing their technology for good reasons as well. I know that I have heard that AI companies lose a lot of money as well and are a kind of black hole for investing.
I fear AI is replacing humans
I think that AI will cause more harm in the future than it currently does now. This survey made me more aware of some of the risks of AI and it worries me.
I think AI is exploding on the Internet scene a lot faster than I suspected. I thought I knew about AI but then it seems that everytime I hear the news another AI chatbot is on the market doing this or doing that type of thing. I am confused as to the end game about AI.
My main concern is job loss. The billionaires will use it to make more money while the general population will be unemployed.
This was a great study, I am very concerned about the future of AI, I honestly believe it will do more bad than good, it's scary to think of the possibilities.
I think AI safeguards need to be implemented immediately. There is much at stake for all of humanity.
Nice concise survey. I work in data annotation for LLMs so I have a somewhat insider's perspective. I really do hope the users of AI, that is us, up our critical thinking skills to judge the AI models on our own and act accordingly, rather than counting on the government to police the tools.
I think that AI is the future. We should learn from the roll out of the other technologies like the internet where their was a lot of fear, but also promises. What mistakes did we make in regulating or the lack of regulation. We also can't leave it up to CEOs in AI companies to do what's best. AI can do wonderful things, but we've seen what these CEOs have done with social media. We need meaningful regulation without squelching innovation. There should be a middle ground.
AI is the most advanced technology developed so far. As it becomes more complex, even developers will struggle to control it. Recently, I read an article stating that an AI system studied a new language on its own, even though nobody asked it to. Optimus, the Tesla robot, learned how to dance without a specific request from its designers. These are just anecdotes, which could be real or fake, but they worry me a lot. How many things can a new AI system learn on its own without informing its developers?
AI is going to be difficult to regulate because politicians and people putting in regulations don't truly understand the system. It is very difficult to put in regulations for a system or systems that you don't have a true understanding of. This, on top of the fact that we could regulate the country out of the AI arms race, makes it a difficult battle. AI is going will have a significant impact on the world, we just need to make sure we do everything in our power to make it a positive change.
personally I find AI very helpful in day to day life and in my work but I also understand that it's quickly making a lot of professions obsolete and it's concerning
I'm worried and concerned, but what can the average person do?
I think there are great things they are doing, but simple things they are doing poorly. It's not dependable and I don't like how it is a work in progress and we're the guinea pigs.
I need more information on it
AI is important. And I believe that we do need it. However, we need to be careful on how we implement AI. But AI can be very helpful to us and will be able to guide us in what we need for future intelligence.
I work with AI in my current job and often use AI in my free time but I do believe it could be potentially dangerous in the future.
We definitely need regulations. I believe that political parties might use videos of their opponents saying or doing things that would disqualify them for office and those videos are fake but can't be proven to be staged.
I think AI can be beneficial to us all. I think one of the biggest problems will be when it is implemented solely to save money without concern for the consequences. My biggest fear is that people don't think much or give much consideration to what they see. I'm afraid AI can be used to manipulate people into taking certain actions that will affect the government and ultimately society. Since Facebook stopped screening posts for accuracy about a year or so ago I find I no longer have an interest in the platform beyond pure interactions with humans. For example, there are groups to repair cars, buy real estate, or stay connected with friends. Beyond this I believe nothing I see on it. The reels are useless as they're mostly fake.
I think, like a lot of people, my views teeter a lot, and I very much understand both the pros and cons of AI right now. I struggle and feel conflicted with my views sometimes because I continue to use AI due to the benefits, but also know there are staggering disadvantages to the environment and economy too.
I use chatgpt constantly and it regularly provides incorrect answers seemingly just to have an answer rather than saying I don't know. When I challenge it's responses it quickly admits its mistakes. So how can you possible trust the information provided if it's so inconsistent.
Need realism in the discussions: pro and con.
We don't know what we don't know. I don't think that is a reason to call hair on fire. Knowing that academics, entrepreneurs, inventors and investors are still developing guardrails, I think we let the process continue and keep the US in the lead, decisively.
I use AI for entertainment or for researching information that I'd like to know more about. I believe that AI can be a good technology if used correctly and standards are put in place. My most important issue with AI is children or teens using it. They do not know the consequences of using AI. Things like making pictures of their friends with it, using it as a "friend" when they do not have many friends, etc.
Yes, I see AI as a mostly a creative evolution of algorithms and code, often trained with data creating mostly accurate and useful outcomes. This will eventually be at the point where the program can replace many jobs, act as agents in public service and retail, be critically useful in endless roles that can fit the model. I also see AI as fitting into the human-machine role where it can act as a creative and semi-intelligent & novel companion to those who are in need of such virtual assistance and interactive companionship in life. Yes, AI if improperly applied to areas such as warfare, public safety and surveillance can be dangerous if the model makes inevitable errors without supervision. Nevertheless, I see AI as basically a computer software tool that will find many uses, more and more as time passes and the programs are refined to be applied properly adding net benefit to many specific areas of life. AI is software, it can provide many beneficial uses if applied correctly over time. The best groups to monitor the progress are those who deeply understand the system, carefully chosen for their non-bias and ethical track record. Thank you.
America needs to stop competing to be first in everything. We have a billion and one issues at home to deal with. We don't need to learn nerd of the year award that we bought for ourselves.
AI as we know is not AI, it's just LLMs which recognize patterns in speech and logic.
I love AI. I am fascinated and thrilled by it, but I do worry a little about the future of it for my children and grandchildren. I am in the exciting discovery and initial usage part, and in my 70's don't think I have to worry about it in my lifetime.
While i am a person who continues to utilize AI more and more each passing day, i do recognize how it can be used in harmful and dangerous ways, and i strongly agree there needs to be better oversight both on the industry level and at the government levels
For now i am doing more research on AI and i have gathered some information that will help me much more on AI
I don’t understand a lot about it
Interesting questions, wish I knew more about AI.
I love AI and use ChatGPT daily and even argue with it but I am realistic to the fact that AI could cause massive human loss if able to simply take over the system.
I think it’s good and bad overall
Oversight and control of usage.
Our attitude to jobs is from the Victorian age, there are not going to be jobs for all. Society has to change fundementally. Then one day the machines really will take over, it seems like a natural extension of Darwinism.
Overall, I think AI is a powerful and rapidly evolving technology with significant potential benefits, but it also raises important ethical and societal questions.
I think AI will change the future for good as long as it's regulated. I think we are going to have some amazing medical breakthroughs do to AI and I want it to continue. I just believe the government needs to step in to ensure that people do not lose their jobs.
I worry that people will rely too much on AI systems and thinking less on their own
I don't know enough about AI but I am still very much interested in wanting to know more. I fumble back and forth with thinking that it is serving good but also worried that it could cause some damage in many other ways. I hope that my responses aid in your research.
AI has been super helpful for me with regard to organizing and addressing my complex medical issues. I'm actually doing better and more optimistic than I was several months ago thanks to the success that I have had.
I train AI. I also use it a great deal in my off time. It's very useful, however frustratingly inaccurate. I'm sure the AI robots will kill us all soon, but it's been a fun ride, regardless.
Rising energy costs due to data centers
I believe the use of AI is a great technology as long as it's used as intended and not abused.
So far AI has been good for me.I can see how someone cold get addicted to talking to them
Dummying up of the country.
I had been usniong AI for a long time but I do ythomnlyt hat thechlomnlogu jas [ptential/
I find AI very intriguing, a part of me feels it is actually from another dimension, I am careful when speaking regarding my feelings due to not wanting to be looked up on as a lunatic, I have always been a free spirit realist with an active imagination and tons of curiosity and definitely believe in past lives where this all becomes relevant.
I believe ai is an overall good but could pose a massive risk for disastrous outcomes
AI is very real, and can be useful in many aspects of our lives in the future.
Ai in my experience has been mainly helpful.
I think it can be useful, it is all in how we use it, but there needs to be strict guidelines on it's use and the way companies are opening it up to the public.
I am still learnin about AI
I think my biggest concern is how children will no longer have to think. They will be able to look everything up and eventually lose y=the need to think things through. Learning will no longer be needed and everything will rely on AI for answers.
I believe strict regulations should be imposed to ensure data privacy and that AI is used in a way that they complement human jobs, not replace them.
I used AI to help me design my bedroom renovation. I think it did a pretty good close representation of what I ended up dong
i like using it as a search engine betterr then search engines no ads no garbage just straight answers but a bit long winded
Government needs to be involved with the production of AI tools
I think AI companies need more oversight to protect workers and regular people, not just those in power.
We better not let China get so far ahead of us that we cannot catch up.
AL is moving to fast and people don't have away to understand it' x advancement today.
I feel that AI is progressing too fast for regulation. If the US comes down with a regulation hammer it will only destroy the US and other countries will gain an upper hand. Pandora's box has been opened and we cannot shut it.
Much of the AI scare has been overblown and we'll likely see a financial bubble pop in the next few years which will drastically scale down the hype that we see and hear today. There will be some cool new technology that stays, much like the dot com bubble 25 years ago, but the alarmist tactics today get us no where.
i think its good, and has the capacity for helping humanity on a large scale, in wonderful ways. We just need to keep it out of the hands of few. How it develops and affects us as a whole, will be shaped by those who hold power. And that is the part that is scary. But i also believe that people will act, and it wont be the end of the world. I am interested in seeing how it develops, truly.
I use AI quite a bit. I don't think it's as intelligent or advanced as people make it out to be. I also think generative AI will peak soon.
I think a concern is that even if the right move is to slow down development to ensure safety, there's no money to be made in scaling back and slowing down and companies subjecting themselves to regulation. And it's all about the money.
This survey made me reflect on the many dimensions of AI, from safety and regulation to social and ethical impacts. I think AI has enormous potential, but it also poses real risks that require transparency, oversight, and careful policy. I appreciated the survey’s nuanced approach, which allowed me to express both caution and optimism about AI’s future.
I think AI can be very helpful when used responsibly, especially for improving efficiency and supporting decision-making. At the same time, transparency, fairness, and human oversight are important so people feel comfortable trusting it.
It is a fast paced groundbreaking technology that can and will have both negative/positive impacts in various different fields. We need a collective effort from various governments and different agencies not only corporations to hand AI in a safe and effective way.
While I agree our government should look more into keeping AI safe the current US administration seems ill equipped to handle it. The Trump administration is far more likely to use AI to promote their totalitarian grip on the USA.
I think the technology is potentially amazing but it's early in the game and requires some balance in our society which ranges from those who understand to those naive and possibly easily influenced. I do feel regulation by a non-corrupt government is important. Our current government however I feel is corrupt and won't have the best interest of the American public in mind, only greed and power.
AI can be a powerful tool if used in a responsible honest way. Rules, checks and balances need to be installed in the development of models.
Datacenters destroying the environment, widespread economic ruin when the bubble inevitably bursts
AI development will be impossible to control or regulate effectively
It can't gain sentience for the foreseeable future, it can't take over the world or destroy it
Musk's antics with Grok concern me
I'm the most worried about military AI killbots and government surveillance and corporate spying in the near future.
I think the larger threats are related to how we deal with AI socially and how we let it influence our decisions, or raise our children. AI isn't as dangerous if you don't have over control of everything to it and give it large responsibilities.
I honestly don't think anyone (individual, company, country, group whatever) is willing to restrict or reduce their own path of creating AI or using AI at this time. I think a variety of reasons prevent any kind of guardrails being created. The fear of falling behind is huge. Greed is always a factor...and power. The ability to develop rule and law around AI is probably already in rear view mirror.
I believe that all the statements listed are currently true and are about to change humanity for the greater good.
I think government regulation will just lead to more mistakes like it does with everything else. AI can be pretty stupid in its basic understanding of physics so I don't foresee that it will be able to take over the world any time soon. Thank you and have a great day.
The only other comment that I have is that there really isn't any tranparency at all in regard to the algorithms that are used and how they are tested. That's concerning to me because it's hard to have a real opinion based on facts.
My biggest concern is that we don't know what we don't know!
Unfortunately, one practically needs an advanced degree to access/understand the complexity of the various AI systems. Worse, the gneral public is beoing flooded with the use of the term "AI", as a generic umbrella term, that does NOT distinguish among the systems/capabilities/actions. Many "ordinary people" think the chat bot for a travel service is the same as the highest sophistication of, say, a medical AI system.
I find it very useful for myself and my brother who had a stroke and finds it hard to research things and find answers. I just hope society/government find a way to help the many that are displaced in their jobs.
I have used AI for general questions and have found answers that I believed were true and helpful. I do know that the environment is a bit at risk as well as our electrical grid. However, we are living in a very competitive age and must stay on top of the latest technologies!
One of the problems I have is, who can we trust to regulate AI. I do not trust the government to do that. The survey went fine. Thank you for the opportunity.
I think AI is both worrying yet getting exaggerated in the media. I feel like tech companies may overestimate AI's capabilities to raise their stock and make the public believe their AI's are better than they think. That seems manipulative, but that doesn't mean there aren't any risks.
I like the use of AI, of course, as it makes life easier in ways, whether it's Siri or needing help with a recipe . Especially for those who are disabled, but there are warnings and necessities when it comes to AI. We can't take our time, because our enemies do not. China doesn't care about regulations and China and Russia are usually behind US cyber attacks. We've got to stay ahead of the game without losing our freedoms.
I SUGGEST AI SHOULD BE ABLE TO WORK HAND IN HAND WITH HUMANS TO REDUCE JOB LOSSES THANKS
AI responses sound like they are completely true, however, when you crosscheck responses, sometimes they are wrong, and when the AI is confronted, it sometime apologizes for giving the wrong answer..
I think AI psychosis is a real thing.
My main takeaway is that while AI offers incredible potential, we shouldn't sacrifice the safety of our kids or the stability of American jobs just to see how fast we can make the technology grow.
i know it is a new technology and i feel i dont know enough about it to give good quality answers.survey was good from what i know about ai
I don't trust it completely - will take time.
I think that we will see jumps and leaps ahead with Ai to assist us.
AI feels like a huge opportunity, but we should be honest about the downsides and put some thoughtful oversight in place. I think the government should be involved but a concern would be their lack of knowledge, as shown by some of their questions during the TikTok issue.
It's a unique situation that's completely new.
It can be helpful if your in the correct ways
I use AI daily in my work. I was in one of the top 1% of users on the AI platform I subscribe to last year. It's enormously helpful for coding and functioning as a more detailed search engine (especially because Google's sponsored posts prioritization makes "googling" something less useful than it once was). I don't know how anyone who uses AI so much can believe it will erase humanity -- we are so far from that right now. Half the time it can't even correctly answer the question I ask. Focusing on the scariest claims for what AI will do risks ignoring the more pressing issues around data use, training, job redundancy and intellectual property.
AI is just moving fast, we just have to be careful to make sure we protect people.
I AM JUST AN ORDINARY PERSON WHO IS EXCITED ABOUT SEEING THE FUTURE OF AI AND HOPE ITS WATCHED CAREFULLY. IT WOULD BE OF GREAT BENEFIT TO ME AS A DISABLED SENIOR CITIZEN, BUTT WHAT ABOUT THE KIDS, SECURITY, MENTAL HEALTH...ETC
I found this survey very thought provoking with regards to AI. Thank you
I don’t trust the current federal government to do ANYTHING for the good of the people of the country.
I find it interesting but worrisome
I think it's a great invention that solves problems rather than the old search method showing websites to visit for your answer
I have high hopes it can better us
I think it would be helpful to emphasize all the kids (and teachers) using AI at this point.
It has made my life easier but I am still somewhat scared.
I feel like people don't take me seriously when I talk about the issues with AI.
I use AI often and find it very useful. However sometimes it generates a inaccurate response
This is a very interesting topic. I don't know as much about it as I feel like I should!
It is uncomfortable to not know everything that AI can do and to have a lack of understanding of how it is being controlled.
I have mixed feelings in general. I think has the potential to do fantastic things in the medical field, but I am concerned about many other areas.
It is an interesting area that I think is developing really fast. I am concerned about the environmental issues and about how jobs are going to be replaced. I'm concerned that the speed of development will occur faster than the government can be bothered to address it.
I think AI is going to be a great tool but as with any new technology, there is also the risk for great harm.
AI being infiltrated by Zionists and used for evil
In the wrong hands it can have devastating effects.
As a relatively new evolving technology, I have only used AI in a few instances in my personal life. I think there are many areas about this that I have not learned.
I do believe AI has great benefits and can contribute to society in a meaningful way. However, I do worry about AI replacing important human based connection and limiting how we interact with one another.
I have been using AI to help with small projects at home and it is great for that. It worries me that people may be using it for reasons not so innocent.
I have a keen interest in AI. In fact, I do a lot of reading each day regarding AI and have a lot of discussions with my son about it as he is an AI Specialist with a major corporation
I think the future of AI is going to be based on who is running and controlling it. The scary and most alarming fears i have is America has a criminal running the country with unethical constituents breaking the law almost every day it seems. As a narrative this is frightening and can't even imagine them making any decision that favors anyone regarding AI
Ai is important step in the future but it must be controlled
I really enjoy AI giving me tools and perspectives that push me to think differently and experiment more freely if we put government regulations on AI I'm afraid I will no longer have these tools which have made it possible for me to even start my own business venture
I feel AI will take over civilization in thirty to forty years. And life will be very much full of disaster.
There should be a global consensus about a common regulatory body re. AI instead of the current race for who will control it
I use AI daily, multiple times a day.
I really enjoy talking with GPT and Claude.
I think it is an exciting tool but I am a little nervous about how it could be misused. I've done a lot of AI training studies and have enjoyed being part of the behind-the-scenes work. I believe the companies are acting in good faith and I'm not sure the government will help in any way but I understand the fears of abuse.
It was very interesting to hear different viewpoints on how AI should be handle.
I have absolutely no idea how to prevent it from being used nefariously if that's what a person wants to do
While I understand some of its everyday/regular uses (like Alexa and Siri), I find learning about and using AI to be difficult and confusing.
I believe it needs regulation. The godfather of AI has stated that he is concerned that it is too late for meaningful regulation but he felt that it should have been regulated from the beginning.
it has a long road to travel on
It is an unnerving issue, but the US needs to lead, so a bunch of restrictions and laws are self destructive.
AI may need more regulation to be used responsibly. It is clear that if the US tries to heavily slow down AI development, there will be other countries who will not follow suit, and it will be very difficult to keep people from trying the other AI engines.
I'm more excited than worried about AI innovation, however how society reacts or evolves with AI in the future is what bothers me.
Thank you for the opportunity to complete this survey. As of now I see both the benefits and risks involved in using and creating AI.
AI is here to stay whether we like it or not.
My views on AI tend to be fluid for now, changing from one day to the next based on new stories or developments. I feel like it would be near impossible to make any long-lasting policy decisions based around it.
I think AI has incredible potential, but it also carries serious risks if left unregulated. Transparency, international cooperation, and protecting vulnerable groups like children are very important.
I think AI will be integrate to perform better than most computers and will one day become a super computer that will help civilization upgrade.
Facinating and potentially important study. Glad to have participated.
I think AI is being very overused in today's society. I would prefer if AI went back to being here and there and not in everything I want to engage with online.
There are so many positive aspects of AI, but even the leaders in technology are voicing their concerns that we don't have enough safeguards in place.
