Trusting Pragmatists

23%

of the concerned U.S. adult population

The least concerned segment on every measure, yet they passed the concern screener. They trust institutions, use AI comfortably, and see the current trajectory as broadly acceptable.

Trusting Pragmatists are the largest segment (23%) and the closest to gender parity (51% male). They are the most Republican group (33%), though Democrats still hold a plurality (40%). On overall AI concern, 77% select "somewhat concerned," with none selecting "extremely." Nearly a quarter (24%) say they are more excited than concerned about AI, the highest rate in the sample. Their top concern is misinformation at 54%, the strongest single-concern dominance of any segment. Existential concerns are essentially absent (3% select extinction). They have the highest trust in both tech companies and government of any group.

In Their Own Words

What Pragmatists respondents said when asked to share their thoughts on AI in their own words.

I think it's impossible for the US to regulate. It'd need to be THE WORLD regulating. I simply do not trust China, or other countries to really regulate it themselves. I'd much rather we be able to compete than to kneecap ourselves and hand over the advantage to more nefarious countries.

I believe many people are overhyping AI, and it's not "too late" to implement regulations. Even ordinary individuals like myself can learn and understand the basics to contribute to the dialogue, helping shape policies that serve the common good of humanity. We shouldn't give up and say, "it's moving too fast, it's out of our hands, and it's too powerful to stop now!" That mindset is dangerous because it could lead to our downfall, not AI.

Nice concise survey. I work in data annotation for LLMs so I have a somewhat insider's perspective. I really do hope the users of AI, that is us, up our critical thinking skills to judge the AI models on our own and act accordingly, rather than counting on the government to police the tools.

Independent Man, 67, NY Parent · Graduate degree

I think that AI is the future. We should learn from the roll out of the other technologies like the internet where their was a lot of fear, but also promises. What mistakes did we make in regulating or the lack of regulation. We also can't leave it up to CEOs in AI companies to do what's best. AI can do wonderful things, but we've seen what these CEOs have done with social media. We need meaningful regulation without squelching innovation. There should be a middle ground.

Democrat Woman, 62, CA High school · Part-time worker

AI is the most advanced technology developed so far. As it becomes more complex, even developers will struggle to control it. Recently, I read an article stating that an AI system studied a new language on its own, even though nobody asked it to. Optimus, the Tesla robot, learned how to dance without a specific request from its designers. These are just anecdotes, which could be real or fake, but they worry me a lot. How many things can a new AI system learn on its own without informing its developers?

Democrat Man, 72, AZ Parent · Graduate degree · Full-time worker

AI is going to be difficult to regulate because politicians and people putting in regulations don't truly understand the system. It is very difficult to put in regulations for a system or systems that you don't have a true understanding of. This, on top of the fact that we could regulate the country out of the AI arms race, makes it a difficult battle. AI is going will have a significant impact on the world, we just need to make sure we do everything in our power to make it a positive change.

I think AI can be beneficial to us all. I think one of the biggest problems will be when it is implemented solely to save money without concern for the consequences. My biggest fear is that people don't think much or give much consideration to what they see. I'm afraid AI can be used to manipulate people into taking certain actions that will affect the government and ultimately society. Since Facebook stopped screening posts for accuracy about a year or so ago I find I no longer have an interest in the platform beyond pure interactions with humans. For example, there are groups to repair cars, buy real estate, or stay connected with friends. Beyond this I believe nothing I see on it. The reels are useless as they're mostly fake.

Things like making pictures of their friends with it, using it as a "friend" when they do not have many friends, etc.

Yes, I see AI as a mostly a creative evolution of algorithms and code, often trained with data creating mostly accurate and useful outcomes. This will eventually be at the point where the program can replace many jobs, act as agents in public service and retail, be critically useful in endless roles that can fit the model. I also see AI as fitting into the human-machine role where it can act as a creative and semi-intelligent & novel companion to those who are in need of such virtual assistance and interactive companionship in life. Yes, AI if improperly applied to areas such as warfare, public safety and surveillance can be dangerous if the model makes inevitable errors without supervision. Nevertheless, I see AI as basically a computer software tool that will find many uses, more and more as time passes and the programs are refined to be applied properly adding net benefit to many specific areas of life. AI is software, it can provide many beneficial uses if applied correctly over time. The best groups to monitor the progress are those who deeply understand the system, carefully chosen for their non-bias and ethical track record. Thank you.

Unfortunately, one practically needs an advanced degree to access/understand the complexity of the various AI systems. Worse, the gneral public is beoing flooded with the use of the term "AI", as a generic umbrella term, that does NOT distinguish among the systems/capabilities/actions. I use AI daily in my work. I was in one of the top 1% of users on the AI platform I subscribe to last year. It's enormously helpful for coding and functioning as a more detailed search engine (especially because Google's sponsored posts prioritization makes "googling" something less useful than it once was). I don't know how anyone who uses AI so much can believe it will erase humanity -- we are so far from that right now. Half the time it can't even correctly answer the question I ask. I do believe AI has great benefits and can contribute to society in a meaningful way. However, I do worry about AI replacing important human based connection and limiting how we interact with one another.

I have been using AI to help with small projects at home and it is great for that. It worries me that people may be using it for reasons not so innocent.

I have a keen interest in AI. In fact, I do a lot of reading each day regarding AI and have a lot of discussions with my son about it as he is an AI Specialist with a major corporation

I think the future of AI is going to be based on who is running and controlling it. The scary and most alarming fears i have is America has a criminal running the country with unethical constituents breaking the law almost every day it seems. As a narrative this is frightening and can't even imagine them making any decision that favors anyone regarding AI

Ai is important step in the future but it must be controlled

I really enjoy AI giving me tools and perspectives that push me to think differently and experiment more freely if we put government regulations on AI I'm afraid I will no longer have these tools which have made it possible for me to even start my own business venture

I feel AI will take over civilization in thirty to forty years. And life will be very much full of disaster.

Independent Woman, 45, OH High school · Full-time worker

There should be a global consensus about a common regulatory body re. AI instead of the current race for who will control it

I use AI daily, multiple times a day.

I really enjoy talking with GPT and Claude.

I think it is an exciting tool but I am a little nervous about how it could be misused. I've done a lot of AI training studies and have enjoyed being part of the behind-the-scenes work. I believe the companies are acting in good faith and I'm not sure the government will help in any way but I understand the fears of abuse.

It was very interesting to hear different viewpoints on how AI should be handle.

Independent Man, 24, AZ High school · Part-time worker

I have absolutely no idea how to prevent it from being used nefariously if that's what a person wants to do

While I understand some of its everyday/regular uses (like Alexa and Siri), I find learning about and using AI to be difficult and confusing.

I believe it needs regulation. The godfather of AI has stated that he is concerned that it is too late for meaningful regulation but he felt that it should have been regulated from the beginning.

it has a long road to travel on

It is an unnerving issue, but the US needs to lead, so a bunch of restrictions and laws are self destructive.

Republican Man, 62, WY Graduate degree

AI may need more regulation to be used responsibly. It is clear that if the US tries to heavily slow down AI development, there will be other countries who will not follow suit, and it will be very difficult to keep people from trying the other AI engines.

I'm more excited than worried about AI innovation, however how society reacts or evolves with AI in the future is what bothers me.

Thank you for the opportunity to complete this survey. As of now I see both the benefits and risks involved in using and creating AI.

AI is here to stay whether we like it or not.

My views on AI tend to be fluid for now, changing from one day to the next based on new stories or developments. I feel like it would be near impossible to make any long-lasting policy decisions based around it.

I think AI has incredible potential, but it also carries serious risks if left unregulated. Transparency, international cooperation, and protecting vulnerable groups like children are very important.

I think AI will be integrate to perform better than most computers and will one day become a super computer that will help civilization upgrade.

Independent Man, 41, OH Parent · High school

Facinating and potentially important study. Glad to have participated.

I think AI is being very overused in today's society. I would prefer if AI went back to being here and there and not in everything I want to engage with online.

Democrat Man, 69, AZ Parent · High school · Retired

There are so many positive aspects of AI, but even the leaders in technology are voicing their concerns that we don't have enough safeguards in place.

Democrat Woman, 71, AZ Parent · Some college · Retired
AI is going to be difficult to regulate because politicians and people putting in regulations don't truly understand the system. It is very difficult to put in regulations for a system or systems that you don't have a true understanding of. This, on top of the fact that we could regulate the country out of the AI arms race, makes it a difficult battle. AI is going will have a significant impact on the world, we just need to make sure we do everything in our power to make it a positive change.
